International Centre For Suppressed Music

June 2000 International Conference

The ICSM’s first project was an international conference at SOAS in June 2000 entitled ‘Thwarted Voices: Music Suppressed by the Third Reich’. It focused on Franz Schreker – one of the most popular composers in the 1920s and 30s (originally from Austria) and the Head of Composition at the Berlin Hochschule für Musik, as well as his pupils. These were the crème de la crème of German musical talent – almost all of whom were banned and exiled or ended in concentration camps. It was the first major conference of its kind in the UK and made a considerable international impact – though sadly no publication emerged from it.
